History of Hyderabad

Hyderabad, the IT capital of India boasts of a rich history. Hyderabad is a city where the glamorous orient presents itself in full glory. Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh, located on the banks of Musi River. The history of Hyderabad is interesting.

History of Hyderabad starts with the Qutb Shahi rulers of Golconda. The city was established by Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah. The city of Bhagyanagar was founded in 1591, named after the beloved wife of Quli Qutb Shah, Bhagmathi. When queen Bhagmathi joined the royal dynasty she received the title “Hyder Mahal”. So Bhagyanagar was renamed as Hyderabad.

The Qutb Shahi dynasty was founded by Sultan Quli Qutb Mulk. This dynasty was the rulers of Golconda. Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah, from Qutb Shahi dynasty was the founder of Hyderabad. Charminar was also built by Sultan Quli Qutb Shah, which is the icon of the city.

During the 16th and 17th century the power of Qutb Shahi dynasty rose and Hyderabad became an important center of diamond trade. The diamonds of the Golconda mines gave birth to some of the world famous diamonds like “ Koh-i-Noor”, “ Hope Diamond” and “ Darya e-Noor”. Economic prosperity brought forth the Cultural and literary affluence. Persian and Indo-Islamic culture were predominant in the area. Besides, local Telegu culture also flourished under the patronages of the rulers. Gradually, replacing Golconda, Hyderabad became the capital of the Qutb Shahi rulers.



In 1687, Hyderbad was captured by Aurangzeb. However, under the Mughal rule the appointed governors became powerful and gained autonomy. Asaf Jah I, who got the title of Nizam-ul-Mulk established control over Hyderabad in 1724. From then to a year after India’s independence Hyderabad was under the rule of Asaf Jah dynasty. The successors of Asfa Jah were known as Nizams. Hyderabad under the rule of seven Nizams reached the peak of affluence in art, architecture and culture.
